Balancing Hyperlactatemia and Acute Kidney Injury Risk in Cardiac Surgery:
Optimizing Indexed Oxygen Extraction Ratio and Indexed Oxygen Delivery
In cardiac surgery, balancing hyperlactatemia (HL) and the risk of acute kidney injury (AKI) is critical. AKI is a sudden decline in kidney function, which can be precipitated by factors such as hypoperfusion, hypoxia, and systemic inflammation during surgery.
HL occurs when there is an excess of lactate in the blood, often due to inadequate oxygen delivery and tissue hypoxia. HL during cardiac surgery is detectable at a considerable rate and is associated with postoperative morbidity and mortality.
Our presenter is Ignazio Condello, PhD, Clinical Perfusionist. He is a respected author of numerous peer reviewed articles, and he will focus on clinical evidence revealing the relationships between the critical parameters DO2i and O2ERi. Attendees will gain a deeper understanding of monitoring the Goal Directed Perfusion parameters that will help avoid HL and AKI with the intent of improving patient outcomes.

Ignazio Condello, PhD, is the Chief Perfusionist at Anthea Hospital, Gvm Care & Research, Bari, Italy, and has held this position since 2013. Dr. Condello earned two PhDs; first in 2019 for research related to the impact of artificial intelligence on extracorporeal technology. His second PhD came in 2024 from Maastricht University, Netherlands, for his studies related to the effects, management, and optimization of extracorporeal techniques and technologies in contemporary cardiac surgery. Dr. Condello began his education in 2011, when he earned a Bachelor's Degree in Health Professions from the University of Pavia, and then in 2012 he went on to earn a Master's Degree in Basic and Advanced Echocardiography from the University of Padova. He has authored or coauthored more than 120 publications.
Leslie Curry, CCP, BS, is a Principal Clinical Specialist with Terumo Cardiovascular. She graduated from the Perfusion program at the Medical University of South Carolina in 2001 and has 23 years of clinical experience in adult cardiac cases. In 2012 Leslie helped her team at Prisma Health launch an adult ECMO program in Greenville, SC. In 2019, she became the STS and TVT Database Manager at AnMED Health in Anderson, SC. In 2023, Leslie began rounding on surgery patients and helped her team raise the patient satisfaction rate to 100% for the surgery department. Leslie is currently focused on integrating Goal Directed Perfusion, technology, and data to improve patient intraoperative and postoperative outcomes.
